A Homage to my Halloween Costume

October 31, 2014By AllisonMade my Day

Happy Halloween by Hand-Painted WeddingsHappy Halloween everyone! Here is a little homage to my costume tonight. Can anyone guess who I’ll be?

I am hosting our annual Halloween party tonight and spent much of the day cleaning, so this quote (hint…it is the introduction to a very famous song) was very inspirational. Wishing everyone a spooky night full of tricks and treats!

What I’ve been up to

You may have noticed that it has been a little quiet here on the Hand-Painted Weddings blog lately. The reason for this is that the last two years I’ve been working real hard to earn my MBA, which I did on July 7…YAY! With tough classes such as international finance and managerial accounting on my hands, I made the tough choice to take a break from blogging….but I’m excited to say that I’m back!

While things may have quiet on the blog, they have not been for Hand-Painted Weddings! I’ve worked on a lot of super fun projects the last few months that I am excited to share with you in the coming weeks.

Photo by Hand-Painted Weddings. Holidays at Terrain. Photo by Hand-Painted Weddings.Happy Christmas Eve everyone! Its been a busy month full of holiday festivities, a long weekend at the wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, a second surgery on my leg to remove the hardware that was set in March (when I broke it), and a trip to my favorite store (no matter what the season), Terrain. Here are a few photos I took during my latest trip to Terrain which highlight their beautiful, natural decorations for the holidays. I particularly love the antique hydrangeas.

Also, be sure to check your Facebook tomorrow, because I will be posting this year’s Hand-Painted holiday card sent out from my husband and I to our close friends and family. It was a unique card this year, so you won’t want to miss it!

Wedding Paper is the Glue to the Wedding

July 29, 2013By AllisonMade my Day

Hand-Painted Weddings Rave ReviewI love my clients! I love hearing about the details they want incorporated into their wedding. Some people may think about wedding paper as one element to the wedding, but it is so much more.

A great way to look at wedding paper is as the glue to the wedding. It really packages up the beginning (invitations) and ending (thank you cards) as well as connecting all throughout the day from the ceremony programs to the escort cards to the menus. Other fun wedding paper ideas include thumbprint guestbooks, signature drink signs, dessert table signs, table numbers, welcome bag notes, reserved seating signs, bride and groom signs, and gift tags.

Because wedding paper flows throughout the entire event, it is important to me that I know all of the other details you have in mind, so that your wedding feels cohesive. It also sparks my creativity! For example, I knew that the client above, Julia, was likely going to do something fun with her signature drinks, and she told me that they were going to serve their signature drinks in mason jars with peach striped straws, so I was sure to incorporate those details in the Signature Drink sign.

I love bringing ideas to the table in my paper that can also spark something in the event design as well, such as affecting the color palette. From this post I hope you see that wedding paper is so much more than wedding invitations! As Julia says…It can be the cornerstone of your wedding and define the look and feel for the entire event!

If you follow me on Instagram, you noticed that while I was posting on the blog last week, I was actually across the ocean in Budapest, Hungary! I don’t think I have mentioned it here on the blog, but I am currently enrolled in an MBA program. Through this program, our class travels to two different countries (one emerging economy; one developed economy) to explore and learn about the economies and visit businesses. Budapest is considered an emerging economy.

I think Budapest is such an unappreciated European city! I was surprised to see how ornate the buildings were and how beautiful the view was from across the Danube (on both sides). It was so romantic! The nightlife was very lively! They do not use the Euro currency, so the prices were fairly cheap for American travels. I highly recommend making a trip to this city. It has such an interesting history and culture. I loved the city!

Also for me, it was such an accomplishment to be able to travel with my injury. As you know, I broke my leg in March and was having a very slow recovery. At many times I wasn’t sure if I could join my class for this trip, but I kept myself enrolled and used this trip as motivation. I had only gotten off the crutches 4 weeks prior and I can’t say I was the fastest walker in the group, but I was stubborn and climbed stairs and hills to tops of castles and cathedrals. I wasn’t going to let my injury inhibit me and I am very proud of that accomplishment. Also, because of all the exercising I endured, my leg strength has progressed much more rapidly than if I hadn’t pushed it.

Hello Summer

June 24, 2013By AllisonMade my Day

Hello Summer by Hand-Painted Weddings Hello Summer by Hand-Painted Weddings Hello Summer by Hand-Painted Weddings Hello Summer by Hand-Painted Weddings Hello Summer by Hand-Painted Weddings Hello Summer by Hand-Painted WeddingsFlowers are blooming. Insects are busy at work. Days are beautifully long. Mountains of fresh lettuces and fruits are sold at the markets. Summer is upon us.

Summer is a beautiful season. My goal for the summer is to not fill it. Often I feel that people stuff their summers to the brim and then miss the simplicities that come with the season. So lets all take the opportunity to “Lay in the sun and count every beautiful thing we can see” …because there is so much beauty to be seen.

Manhattan

March 28, 2013By AllisonMade my Day

Manhattan Bridge painting by Hand-Painted Weddings

A dear friend of mine is moving to New York City. She’ll be living in Manhattan, starting a new job, and be experiencing many new adventures for sure….she is a very lucky girl.

I’m also a very lucky girl to call her my friend! She has been there for me through the thick and thin the past few years. We’ve shared an office, a neighborhood, our addiction to coffee, carpooled for a bit of time, and many nights over a glass (or 2) of wine. She is one of those friends that just gets me, even when I don’t get me.

I’m going to miss having her so nearby but can’t wait to see how our friendship changes. I’ll likely be enjoying more weekends in NYC once I’m back on my feet again, which I can’t wait for!

When she moved into my neighborhood I painted her a watercolor of a street in Philadelphia…Pine Street to be specific…as a housewarming gift. This was one of the original watercolors I did before starting Hand-Painted Weddings. It only seemed appropriate to paint her a watercolor of NYC to add to her budding collection. The view in this painting is from a street in Brooklyn looking towards the Manhattan Bridge with the Empire State building peeping through the archway.

Moment When Light Equals Dark

March 20, 2013By AllisonMade my Day

Spring potted plant painting by Hand-Painted WeddingsThe Spring Equinox was completely off my radar this year (clear by the fact that I’m so late in posting this mini blog post). I got a beautiful little email from a good friend this morning with this article about the Spring Equinox in it.

A little snippet from the article by Teo Bishop:

“Here in the Northern Hemisphere we observe the Spring Equinox, the moment when the light of day and the darkness of night are equal. Today, if but for a single moment, there is perfect balance.

And there is meaning in the balance.

The Equinox is more than just a scientific fact, an observable reality; it points to the shift that we are making toward a time of new growth and new life.”

The message has been sitting with me all day. I’m struggling with my own growth. In literal terms this means bone growth. In psychological and spiritual terms this growth is manifesting as patience and faith, both of which I’m struggling with on this Spring Equinox. I’m adjusting to a new contraption around my broken leg which is causing pain, coming to terms with disappointment about how slow this recovery is going to be, along with some hard decisions of canceling trips and classes due to the slowness.

However, I want to thank the Spring Equinox for giving me hope. Hope for new life, a shift towards light, and most importantly growth.

Watercolor in Catalog Inspiration

January 22, 2013By AllisonMade my Day

Anthropologie catalog featured on Hand-Painted Weddings

The fantastic design team over at Anthropologie does it again! They are a constant inspiration to me and I just adore what they did with their latest catalog (seen above). One of the reasons I am so drawn to Anthropologie‘s clothes is because of the artistic nature of their patterns, textures, and shapes, so it only makes sense to merge their products into art. In their latest catalog their product photographs are completed by beautiful watercolor illustrations along their edging. This creates a unique collage effect that oozes with wistful, artistic expression.

Life is Pretty Amazing

Life is Pretty Amazing

I’m feeling a bit uneasy today as my grandfather is being put on hospice care and has only a mere few days left in his life. He will be very missed by family and friends when he takes his last breath in this life.

This whole process makes me think about this beautiful photo/illustration/quote that I pinned a few weeks back. Life is pretty amazing. Take the time to stop and look around at its splendor.

Weird Looking Fruit

January 2, 2013By AllisonMade my Day

Buddha's Hand Painting by Hand-Painted WeddingsPainting and photos by Hand-Painted Weddings.

The other day I walked into Whole Foods and saw a display of these outrageously cool fruits! I had never seen anything like them before! Well, maybe at the aquarium amongst the coral reefs. As soon as I saw this fruit I knew I had to share it with you all on this blog because it is just too cool not to share.

I learned from the cashier that this fruit is called a Buddha’s hand, which tickled my fancy because it does look like a hand reaching out (albeit with tentacles). The skin was lemon-like in texture and had a strong citrus smell. To be honest, I did not eat the Buddha’s hand, but I had a lot of fun painting it!

Gratitude Week: I am thankful for…

November 20, 2012By AllisonMade my Day

It is the week of gratitude, and I want to share with you what I am most thankful for. I am thankful for my husband, Carl. He never ceases to amaze me in his zest for life. He smiles (and laughs) more than anyone I know. He is an incredibly intelligent person, and shows more patience than I could even imagine is possible. He gives the best hugs and is just overall warm. He is a great many other things, but overall, he makes life more fun and I am incredibly grateful to have him as my partner.

What are you thankful for?

Peace

November 9, 2012By AllisonMade my Day

I have this quote on my fridge and on the home screen of my cell phone. It is a favorite of mine. It speaks to me. It is something I need constant reminding of. I know it is antithetical, but peace is challenging. It is something that I cultivate through yoga and self-exploration and realization. Peace is a big thing I am reflecting on this Autumn. What are you reflecting on this Autumn?

Autumn in Philly

November 8, 2012By AllisonMade my Day

Autumn in Philly is lovely. The beautiful tree-lined streets in Society Hill start to brighten as the leaves change colors and soon litter the sidewalk. Potted mums and pumpkins adorn people’s stoops. Layered sweaters, scarfs, and cute boots adorn passer-bys. The smell of old fireplaces being turned on for the first time in the season is intoxicating to all around.

As the season comes to a close, I thought it would be appropriate to pull out this painting I did last year of an early Autumn glimpse of Pine Street in the Society Hill/Washington Square West neighborhood.

Make Time Today to…

November 6, 2012By AllisonMade my Day

I got out to vote today…did you? Am I the only person that has adrenaline pumping through their body when they are waiting to vote? And then when I’m walking out of the poll station, I feel this awesome sense of accomplishment and pride…it is almost euphoric honestly.

A few related fun links that you can check out today in your euphoric, patriotic state:

• Check out this beautiful patriotic-themed wedding.

• See if your local yoga studio is participating in Yoga Votes. I am excitedly getting a free yoga session tonight at my local studio.

• Looking for patriotic accessories? Terrain has some super fun options.
