Hand-Painted Yoga - Art inspired by Yoga

Blogging has been a little quiet for the last two weeks, and there is a very good reason for it. Behind the scenes I have been working on a very new, exciting project focused around one of my passions, yoga. I launched this new venture, Hand-Painted Yoga, at the beginning of November in front of holiday shopping, and have been working on setting up Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Hand-Painted Yoga is an online shop featuring abstract art inspired by yoga philosophy. While I have geared the artwork towards yoga, the messages resonate with all humans in a very real, raw way. This is a very personal project for me, because yoga has and continues to impact my life in a deep way.

You might be wondering why I chose to open up a yoga art business since I already have a wedding business, and what do the two have to do with each other. Well, the funny thing is that I was actually drawn to both yoga and weddings at the same time, 7 years ago. I started yoga while planning my own wedding as a stress relief as well as for physical posture reasons (frankly, I wanted to look good in my dress). While I was drawn to yoga for physical reasons, I have been fortunate enough to have teachers along the way that have instilled the philosophies of yoga alongside the physical sequences, and it is those spiritual connections, yoga philosophies that have kept me coming back and growing to a daily practice. More on what drew me to opening up a wedding business here.

In collaboration with my yoga teacher I created abstract watercolors to express visually the phrases my teacher uses throughout class that inspire me far beyond the mat. My wish is that these expressions will inspire others as much as they have inspired me. In this world of ambition and aggressive work ethics, these messages are a breath of fresh air, encouraging the reader to live with intention and naked awareness.

Go on over to the Hand-Painted Yoga website to learn more, and to shop for your loved ones this holiday season.

Dreamcatcher baby shower featured on Smitten Magazine

The stunning Dreamcatcher baby shower I contributed paper for in May is featured on Smitten Magazine today! This was a dream team of talented vendors that came together and created the most beautiful, down-to-earth baby shower imagined. Inspired by the mother and father to-be’s trip to Sedona, this baby shower brings together adorable bohemian design elements like dreamcatchers, feathers, floral crowns, temporary metallic tribal tattoos, and gemstone necklace favors. And it brings them all together in one of the most beautiful restaurants in Philadelphia, Talula’s Garden, with all of its secret garden aesthetic and organic botanicals. Papertini did such a nice job incorporating the nature details of the venue in with the bohemian theme, in a sunny, joyful way.

One of my favorite parts of the shower was the custom dreamcatcher thumbprint guestbook I made as a gift from the planner of the event, Truly You Events, to the mom to-be. This baby shower thumbprint guestbook had 40 spaces at the end of strings for guest’s thumbprints, which mixed in with the feathers of the dreamcatcher.

This bohemian baby shower was also featured on Hostess with the Mostess. More on that feature here.

  • Gallery Bridal Shower

Gallery Bridal Shower by Hand-Painted WeddingsWhat happens when two artists, one of which is also an art teacher, plan a bridal shower together? They plan an artists inspired bridal shower! Over the weekend, my mom and I held a surprise shower at a local art gallery, and it turned out so beautiful that I’m excited to share our ideas in order to inspire other bridal parties who are planning bridal showers. We DIY’ed the decor, centerpieces, and the delicious food. I also painted and designed the invitation. We DIY’ed the bridal shower to make the event more personal, and frankly, to save money.

Let’s start with the bridal shower invitation. The design features an abstract oil painting on canvas with brushstroke white font overlaying it. The canvas texture printed really well on the textured watercolor paper I always print on. It was very exciting to use oil painting instead of watercolor on this design. The second part of the invitation is a blank recipe card that has a place for guests to write in their recipe and on the back it is branded to match the invitation while giving the guests some instructions. It was a fun way for the bride to collect a bunch of family recipes, and it is something that my mom also had at her wedding, so it was a tradition handed down. There was a recipe box at the entranceway of the gallery for guests to put their recipe cards in when the entered.

For our centerpieces, we made each look like an artist’s still life with various art supplies around it. We had a wine centerpiece with corks surrounding a few bottles of alcohol. We had a gourd table with a bunch of fun fall appropriate gourds. We also had a Van Gogh inspired still life with a bouquet of sunflowers and a mini canvas. We used items that we had around our homes already, so that saved a lot of money.

In terms of traditional bridal shower things we skipped…we decided against games and favors. In lieu of games and favors, we did a craft, which worked well with the artist inspired bridal shower theme. We gave every guest a 6″ square tile and each person used alcohol ink to splatter their own designs, which blended together similar to a bright watercolor painting, but was completely easy and skill free, for all those guests out there that say they don’t have an artistic bone in their body. Everybody loved doing a craft instead of a game, and each guest got to bring home a custom piece of art. This was also a budget friendly idea because each tile cost less than $1 and each table shared a set of alcohol inks.

A couple of other ways we brought creativity into this shower were through the DIY cut letter signs like the one saying “Bride” hanging from two easels above my sister’s spot for opening presents. I also brought in my fun graphic upholstered chair for her to sit in while she opened her gifts, making it that much more special. We enlarged photos of the bride in various locations around the world because my sister has such a heart for third world countries, and hung these matted photos on easels around the gallery.

All in all, we heard people say that it was the best bridal shower they’d ever been to, which really flooded our hearts with love because of all the work we did in planning this gallery bridal shower.

Puerto Rico is an amazing option for getting married. For one, if you are a U.S. citizen, you don’t have to worry about asking your guests to get passports for your destination wedding. That is a big plus! If you reside in Puerto Rico, you only have a ferry ride away to get to the beautiful sandy beaches of Culebra or Viequez for a gorgeous beach wedding, similar to the one inspiring this blog post. The first photo above is one of my photos from my trip that inspired the Puerto Rico Beach watercolor wedding invitation.

The other inspiration I collected for couples considering or planning a Puerto Rico wedding focuses on the simple beauty of the island, with flairs of bright color to reflect the colorful Puerto Rican culture.

Puerto Rico Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings

The Puerto Rico Wedding Invitation is inspired by a recent trip my husband and I took to Puerto Rico. We had a fantastic trip, and while we weren’t there for terribly long we explored the rainforest, went kayaking in Fajardo, and explored the nooks and crannies at the most unique artist’s inn in Old San Juan, the historic district, but the most memorable part was when we stayed in a villa on Flamenco beach in Culebra, an island off the main island in Puerto Rico. Culebra is a small island, with most tourists (ourselves included) bouncing around in golf carts traveling from beach to beach. We adored taking our snorkel equipment to each and every beach on the island in search for the perfect underwater view…which happened to be the first beach we went to…go figure. 🙂

We were also so lucky to get a villa right on the beach. Flamenco beach has super clear waters and is part of a Natural Reserve area, so beyond the set of villas we were in, and the one next to us, we had the beach to ourselves at night after the day-trippers took the ferry back to the main island. It was magical seeing the sunset and then watching the stars from the beach. One of the unique things about Flamenco Beach is that the beach is like a cove with the beach arching around like a horseshoe. That is what I captured in the Puerto Rico Wedding invitation. The villas we stayed at along with the beautiful beach would make this an ideal location to get married. This design is ideal for destination wedding invitations as well.

While I am calling this beautiful beach invitation a Puerto Rico invitation, because that is where I gained the inspiration for this painting, I am sure this would be an ideal design for any couple’s beach wedding invitation.Puerto Rico Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings

  • Inspired by Bridal Fashion week runway shows

I have fallen in love with periscope and bridal fashion this past weekend while watching Bridal Fashion week runway shows in NYC. I’ve only joined periscope in the last couple of months and I know a lot of you haven’t joined yet…let me just say…do it! Watching these runway shows as they were happening through periscope has been such a treat!

I think I watched about 20 fashion shows, and while I’m not an expert in fashion by any means, I loved the artistic expressions and the creativity flowing through the fashion shows. I can’t wait to see some real brides wearing these fashionable dresses!

There were a few trends that I thought would be fun to highlight (see below).

The first one is cap sleeves! I happen to think cap sleeves look amazing on most women and they are so delicate and feminine. Another little trend here is that the dresses were very lightly lined so you could see the model’s legs through the dress. This lightly lined look allowed the intricacies of the lace and beadwork to shine through.

    https://instagram.com/p/8okUV-JbBl/?tagged=fw16marchesabridal

Another trend I noticed was the plunging neckline. My friend just bought her plunging neckline dress this past summer from BHLDN and I was sure to tell her that her style is very fashion forward, because there were a lot of versions of the plunging neckline.

    https://instagram.com/p/8vQnArrzai/?taken-by=reem_acra

It’s all about the backs. When the models came down the aisle I could not wait until they turned around and I could see the backs of their dresses, because there were so many interesting backs to these dresses. Really, I could do an entire blog post featuring the backs of dresses.

    https://instagram.com/p/8qSK8fjNdv/?taken-by=allurebridals

The Berta Bridal runway show blew me away! One of the other trends I had noticed were these (I believe they are detachable) trains. What a fun way to separate the ceremony dress from the reception dress, and an easy way to avoid bustling.

    https://instagram.com/p/8s3UklSLTP/?taken-by=bertabridal

Illusion wear was big! So sexy, yet ethereal, with lace trailing throughout the body, illusion wear was maybe the biggest trend I saw on the runway.

    https://instagram.com/p/8qd-WvubQn/?taken-by=moniquelhuillier

Another fun thing I saw was headwear. I do not know how realistic it is that brides will be wearing some of the very loud headpieces that were on the runway (I mean some had antlers), but I’m excited to see where artists take this trend and make it a reality for everyday brides.

    https://instagram.com/p/8opp8jm1ik/?taken-by=smpweddings

Capes were seen throughout the runway shows as alternatives to veils.

    https://instagram.com/p/8rrWshKgkL/?taken-by=oncewed

And one of my favorite trends…sleeves. Delicate lace sleeves were all over the runway. I cannot wait to see more everyday brides going for sleeves on their gowns!

    https://instagram.com/p/8rDXvlSLYi/?taken-by=bertabridal

Super inspired by the artists who orchestrated these shows as well as the artists behind each one of these dresses. I saw a lot of unique fashion but also a lot of ready-to-wear fashion. It was truly a beautiful sight!

  • Country Backyard Wedding – Bride’s favorite moment

A few more glimpses of this fun country backyard wedding including a photo of the joyful wedding party (there I am, third from the left). The girls all wore tan cowboy boots…including the bride, which fit right in with the country theme. The bouquets were lush with a lot of greenery for texture. And we were all given Budweiser beers to drink right after the ceremony – so American!

My favorite question to ask brides after the wedding is “what is their favorite moment from their wedding”. The reason is because I think it gives the bride a second to reflect and see what moment is still lingering with the emotion of the day. It is really powerful. I have also found that it is usually a moment that is unexpected, and has an emotional impact. Laura’s favorite moment is incredibly touching and I feel blessed to share it with you below:

Allison: Favorite moment at your wedding?

Laura: “Obviously the vows and the first dance were top of the list, but for me one of the most special, and unexpected, moments of the day was shared with my dad. My dad and I haven’t spent much of our adult life together and in the time we’ve spent apart he had become a little unfamiliar to me. And here was this man, a little strange to me now, holding his arm in mine as I was waiting to come out the door and turn to the aisle. His hand was held proudly to his chest, a hand that I know every freckle on, and he turned to me and said, “Walk slow baby, this is your moment.”

It hit me in the chest, I felt so overwhelmed with love and with pride. Pride for the woman that I had become, the family that I made, the man that was waiting for me at the end of the aisle and love for the man that was giving me away.”

Congratulations to the beautiful couple, who I’m so blessed to call family!

As I mentioned in Tuesday’s blog post, the bride in this Country backyard wedding did a lot of DIY touches. She spent a long time designing and “crafting” for her wedding. I was lucky enough to work with her on some of the hand-painted touches such as the music themed wedding invitations, thank you cards at each person’s place setting, escort cards which were strung on an antique windowpane, and Country Cobblestone thumbprint guestbook.

The couple both shares a love for music so they included that love visually in their wedding invitation design with the music notes graphic. Laura is a wonderful singer, who wrote and recorded their first dance song at their wedding. This song literally gives me chills…it is so amazing! Craig plays the guitar, so they had a white guitar at their wedding for guests to sign with a gold metallic Sharpie marker.

Impressed by the amount of DIY touches, the bride created for her wedding, I asked her a couple of questions about her tips for other DIY brides out there, as well as how paper products are incorporated into a DIY wedding.

Allison: How did your wedding paper tie into the look of your wedding?

Laura: The Hand-Painted Wedding touches captured the the rustic elegance I was going for. Purples and greens were bled together in a simple, understated elegance as the backdrop for my wedding invitations, escort cards and personalized thank-you cards at each place setting. I chose the Country Cobblestone thumbprint guest book which was perfect because it looked just like the dirt road behind the alter at our backyard country wedding. I hand made almost every decoration in the wedding and so I really appreciated the originality and the beauty of the Hand Painted wedding paper. Allison Krosnick is so talented and I feel so lucky to call her my sister.

Allison: What tips do you have for other DIY backyard wedding brides?

Laura: “Be easy on yourself! Seriously, if you are anything like I was, you are putting way more pressure on yourself than other people are. After a year of planning and crafting, a million pins on pinterest, and a few dozen spreadsheets, the wedding finally came. It was clear about two hours into hair and makeup that things weren’t going to go as planned. Tents were flying upside down, I was a full table short of place settings, and half the lights on my DIY backdrop made with organza and Christmas lights wouldn’t stay lit! The groomsmen forgot their boutonniere and my aisle runner was blowing in the wind as I stood at the alter!

And it was STILL one of the most amazing nights of my life. I stressed out trying to make everything perfect and then nothing went to plan and I realized it didn’t matter anyway, and no one cared. So please brides, be nice to yourself, you are only one woman.”

Come back tomorrow to learn the bride’s favorite moment.

Country Backyard Wedding featured on Hand-Painted Weddings. Photo by Neal Palumbo, Studio 11 West.My beautiful sister in-law, Laura, got married to the love of her life, Craig, this past September in a Country Backyard setting in rural Pennsylvania. Their wedding was one of the most personal weddings I’ve attended, with numerous DIY touches sprinkled throughout the ceremony and reception. This wedding was designed by the bride with so much love that it became an event that literally exuded that love, with the couple telling me afterwards that many guests were professing their love for one another at their wedding (after a few cocktails of course).

One of the special parts of this wedding that the couple celebrated was the blended family that was coming together. This was captured with a sand ceremony with the couple, the groom’s two kids, and the bride and groom’s 2 year old literally blending the sand into this wonderful artistic expression. Also, one of the most touching parts of their ceremony was when the bride knelt down and said her custom vows and promises to the the groom’s children.

I will be sharing aspects of Laura and Craig’s DIY backyard wedding throughout the week, but firstly, I want to share with you what Laura’s favorite physical detail of her wedding was.

Allison: “What was your favorite detail at your wedding?”

Laura: “My favorite detail was MY DRESS! I knew exactly what I wanted before I started shopping for dresses and it may sound a little old fashioned but I wanted an A-line silhouette with a lace covering up to the top of my neck, with lace cap sleeves and an open lace back. I know, sounds like a lot of lace, but it was so beautiful. It was important to me to feel like I projected an image of sweetness to really capture the feeling of a sweet, pure love that I have for my now hubby. Eeek- hubby- love being able to say that!”

Come back tomorrow for part 2 of this lovely real wedding.

The effervescent Water Ripples watercolor wedding invitation was featured in the Summer issue of The Celebration Society Weddings magazine! I supplied the artwork for an editor of the magazine in the Spring, but it was actually one of my clients who worked on a yacht all summer who told me she saw it featured in the magazine, that alerted me that it was published…how funny is that!

I don’t have a big advertising budget, especially for print, so opportunities like this are really exciting! The Water Ripples invitation is featured alongside a lot of other inspiring “Beachy blue” wedding and decor items. I adore that clutch!

The Water Ripples invitation is a great invitation for a wedding happening during the summer and/or for beach weddings. It would also be a beautiful invitation for a wedding happening near a lake or the ocean. Most destination weddings are near the water, so this invitation would also be very fitting in that setting.

Note: The Water Ripples watercolor invitation is available in the shop for purchase.

  • Philadelphia Wedding Stationery Introduction on WeddingLovely now Live!

Wedding Lovely Philadelphia Wedding stationery introductionThere are a lot of eyes on Philly this weekend, which is really exciting for this city I love so dearly. Being the fourth generation in my family to live in the Philadelphia area, I have some deep-rooted loyalty to this beautiful city. While I am not catholic, I’m excited that the Pope chose Philly as its prime location for the World Meeting of Families, because it is bringing some well-deserved attention to this beautiful city.

To further express my love for this city, I recently submitted an article about Philadelphia to the wonderful wedding website WeddingLovely, to introduce the Philadelphia Wedding Invitations section, and this week I’m excited to announce…. it went live. WeddingLovely is a resource for helping you plan your wedding with an online guide to wedding vendors and inspiration.

In the Philadelphia Wedding Invitations introduction, I took the opportunity to write a little bit about the passion and loyalty Philly residents share, and then outlined some Philly wedding inspiration specific to Philadelphia wedding stationery. I have copied the text below, but feel free to click here for the link to the full website.

    ____________

Philadelphia is often known for its rowdy sportsmanship and bombastic attitudes, but the roots of this energy stem from a very strong sense of loyalty and love for Philly. In the city of brotherly love, along with its surrounding suburbs, couples have vast wedding venue options. Couples can get married in historically rich colonial houses along cobblestone streets or in boathouses along the river. They may choose to get married in a train station or at their favorite sports arena. Even farther out of the city couples can choose to get married in a ski lodge or a rustic farm. The diversity of venue options lends itself to a multitude of design inspiration.

Another form of inspiration for your wedding in Philadelphia is the season you choose to get married. Philly has beautiful dogwood trees and cherry blossoms in the spring and hands-down gorgeous fall foliage in autumn. These changes in nature look beautiful decorating a couple’s wedding invitation.

Since the wedding invitation is your guests’ first impression of your wedding day, consider using your wedding venue and/or the season as inspiration for your invitation artwork. You can use Philadelphia’s iconic sites such as the Love statue, Liberty bell, Boathouse Row, or City Hall in your Philadelphia-based wedding. Working with a Philadelphia-based stationer will make this process of finding the perfect Philly icon for your artwork easier.

When hiring your Philadelphia stationer, be sure she/he also creates coordinating wedding day-of paper such as ceremony programs, escort cards, menus, favor tags, and finishing with matching thank you cards to express your gratitude to your guests. Connecting all of these designs from Save-the-date through thank you cards will create a cohesive, beautiful look that is stronger than the sum of its parts.

Cartagena Watercolor Save-the-Date by Hand-Painted Weddings Cartagena Watercolor Save-the-Date by Hand-Painted WeddingsWhen my client gave a photo of a shopping bag as inspiration for her custom save the date, I knew it was going to be a fun project! This is my first client who specifically requested an abstract watercolor design for their save the date, which was extraordinarily exciting for me!

This watercolor save the date design is light, bright, and joyful, as destination weddings on the beach ought to be! I love the way the paint colors are layered on each other in a fluid and organic way. The script Love is playful and loose. Oftentimes script and calligraphy fonts can feel very feminine but the font used in this watercolor save the date isn’t gender specific. I can’t wait to design their invitation next!

  • Philadelphia Wedding Inspiration

Philly Wedding Love Statuephilly-wedding-invitation-setPhilly wedding LOVE ice sculptureThere are a few Philadelphia wedding landmarks that you will always see bridal parties taking photos at during the wedding season weekends. We are so lucky in Philly to have so many hotspots for perfect Philly wedding photos! In the middle of Broad Street with City Hall in the background is a must! It is so much fun seeing the cars swoosh by the happy couple. Just up the street is LOVE park, which is the inspiration for the design of the Love Park wedding invitation and the ice sculpture, and offers a fantastic wedding shot. There are also a few parks throughout the city that are wonderful ways to get some nature into the set of mostly urban photos, such as Rittenhouse Square and Washington Square. Amanda and Derek, along with Campli Photography, did a beautiful job capturing a few of these Philly wedding landmarks.

Here is day two of Amanda and Derek’s Philly wedding. See day 1 here. Here is one final question for the bride on her choose of Philly Love Park wedding invitations.

Allison: How did your wedding invitations tie into your wedding?

Amanda: The “LOVE theme” tied it all together. City of brotherly love and two people in love getting married. We made sure we took pictures at Love park.

philly_wedding_10Philly wedding bridesmaid card and escort cardAmanda and I also worked together on some wedding day-of paper such as their dancing shoes sign on the flip flop basket and the guestbook sign by the guestbook. It is so nice to add little signs to help your guests navigate your wedding. I also worked with her to design her thank you cards to her wedding party as well as to her wedding day letter to her husband (so sweet). I also worked with her on escort cards (AKA table name cards). The wedding day signs were all inspired by the pink bridesmaid gowns as well as the other colors in the florals at the wedding.

And let’s end with a super fun dance floor photo because it is Friday! Have a wonderful weekend friends!

Today I’m sharing Amanda and Derek’s stunning Philadelphia LOVE wedding that took place downtown this past June. From their LOVE statue themed wedding invitations to their horse drawn carriage through the city, this wedding is chockfull of Philadelphia iconography. Amanda and Derek got married at St. Paul’s Parish in the Italian market and took a horse drawn carriage through the city to the Ballroom at the Ben for their wedding reception.

I worked with Amanda on her LOVE statue themed wedding invitations, which were our shop Love Park invitations with a map and folder enclosure add-on. I also worked with her on escort cards, thank you cards for her wedding party, and dancing shoes and guestbook signs (more on that in tomorrow’s post). It is so much fun working on the various pieces of the wedding because the bride and I build a relationship through the wedding planning process. Below I have asked Amanda a couple of questions to help inspire future Philly wedding couples.

Allison: What was your favorite detail at your wedding?
Amanda: Definitely my dress, cake, our matching Christian Louboutin shoes and the character of the Ballroom at the Ben.

Sedona is a magical place…I adore it…so I knew this shower was going to be magical as well. So magical in fact that Hostess with the Mostess featured it on their blog today.

Later I will share some more photos of this lovely event, but for now you must take a second a scroll through this beautiful party on Hostess with the Mostess!

  • Commissioned Watercolor gift painting the Merion Tribute House

Custom Watercolor Gift - Painting of Merion Tribute House by Hand-Painted Weddings Custom Watercolor Gift - Painting of Merion Tribute House by Hand-Painted WeddingsI love the creative ideas clients come to me with for commissioned watercolor gifts! This client is the mother of the bride. The idea was for a surprise anniversary gift for her daughter and son in law.

Their wedding invitation used thermography for the text and was a simple text only design printed on a thick white board. The idea was to paint their reception site on their invitation. They got married at the popular gothic style castle in the Philadelphia suburbs called the Merion Tribute House.

I met with the client in person and we excitedly went through her wedding photos from her daughter’s wedding. I shared a couple of sketched layouts and we decided to go with the layout above because it was the most colorful. The Merion Tribute house, being castle like, has a lot of gray stonework, so zooming in on the beautiful red door, stained glass windows, and greenery around the entrance brought a lot of nice colors to the watercolor. As you can see in one of the zoomed in photos, I added some silver metallic watercolor to the windows which added a nice shimmer to the piece.

What I liked about this project was that it was very similar to what I create for clients for their wedding invitations but it was almost like a retrospective because the wedding had already occurred.

Patriotic Ideas featured on the KnotI’m a little late to announce this one but Hand-Painted Weddings was featured amongst some very talented Philly vendors in The Knot’s “10 Patriotic Details to Steal From This July Fourth Wedding: An Independence Day inspiration shoot that’s as American as apple pie.”

The Love Sweet Love cake sign and ribbon escort cards were highlighted as two of the ideas for a patriotic wedding. The beautiful tablescape, bouquet, signature cocktail sign, and sparkler cards are also featured in the event, so definitely check it out.

July Fourth invitation set is now available in the Hand-Painted Weddings Invitations Shop.
