Hand-Painted Invitations

  • Watercolor Cartagena Wedding Invitation

Watercolor Cartagena Wedding Invitation at Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa

When one of the stars from the Price is Right contacts you for wedding invitations for her Cartagena wedding in Colombia, you jump up and down! Well, I know I did. It was such a pleasure working with Manuela on her gorgeous Cartagena wedding invitations and wedding day paper. Like many of the brides I work with, she considered every single detail. This is apparent in the photos below from her wedding. Cartagena’s most iconic street is featured in her thank you cards, and is available as an invitation design in the Hand-Painted Weddings shop.

Manuela also wanted to make sure the classic Cartagena street and cathedral was on her wedding invitation. But the main focus of her Cartagena wedding invitation was her wedding venue, the historical showstopper, Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa. With her main wedding color being gold, we splurged for the gold foil lettering on the invitation which really elevated the entire invitation set. Cartagena is a very colorful city in Colombia so I was fortunate enough to get to paint many of the colorful elements in this invitation set.

For Manuela’s wedding day paper, we worked together on her menus, which featured a local Colombian woman with a basket on her head carrying fruits and vegetables from the menu the guests were about to enjoy. The place cards tied in with the Wedding Particular card from the invitation set and featured string light and a soft blue background. String lights hung outside from the cocktail hour location so it was a perfect detail to include. I then worked with one of my friends, Letters by Kristen to do hand calligraphy on all of the place cards in metallic gold ink. These matched the seating arrangement cards we worked together on which hung on top of an antique gold framed mirror for guests to figure out where they were going to sit during the reception. I have to say, it was pretty fun doing the famous Drew Carey’s seating card!

  • Dreamy Lilly Pulitzer Inspired Wedding invitations

This fall wedding was dreamy in every way imaginable. The bride was one of the sweetest, most appreciating people I have ever had the fortune to work with. And she was also one of the most creative brides I worked with. Christina wanted a bold, unique wedding and I was over the moon that I was creating her wedding invitations, wedding day paper and gifts for her.

When we first started gathering inspiration for her invitations, she gave me all sorts of beautiful snippets she had planned for her big day such as her stunning wedding gown, unique bouquet, along with photos of the church she was getting married in. This process is so helpful for me because it gives me a full picture of the day and I love to incorporate pieces from the big day into the paper if it seems fitting.

During the inspiration phase, Christina also mentioned her overall taste. She likes bold designs, no florals, and maybe something inspired by the water since it’s a Virginia Beach wedding, but not too beachy, because it is a late Fall wedding. Oh, and I love Lilly Pulitzer, if that helps. Ding, ding, ding! That little inspiration token became the inspiration for her entire wedding paper designs.

I love doing research. It goes back to my days at college where research would set my designs apart from the class. So, I started researching Lilly Pulitzer‘s patterns and quickly learned that this style was completely in line with my painting style and this would be one of the most stunning invitations I’ve ever created.

I created a water inspired, Lilly Pulitzer inspired pattern with the bride’s colors for the day, magenta, navy and gold, and I love how it came out.

In addition, I painted an abstract painting of the church the couple was getting married in for the ceremony program cover, and the couple loved it so much, that they hired me to recreate it larger as a gift for the pastor that was marrying them.

I hope you have enjoyed hearing my journey working with this lovely couple on their watercolor wedding stationery as well as seen a glimpse of their big day.

Posted on Hand-Painted Weddings. Photo by Katie RicardThere was just too many dreamy wedding details in this styled shoot to fit into one blog post, so today I’m featuring more of the wedding accessories such as the stunning lace BHLDN wedding dress, the beautiful ring from Trumpet and Horn and bridal jewelry from BHLDN, the boho floral crowns by Emlily Floral, and of course, the watercolor wedding invitation set by yours truly. By the way, the Mystical Forest watercolor wedding invitation is available in the Hand-Painted Weddings Shop.

I was lucky enough to join my friend at a BHLDN dress appointment in NYC last summer, and let me just say… I’ve never seen such beautiful laces and unique, delicate touches. Every dress was a work of art. BHLDN is truly inspiring to the wedding market.

I’m in love with the lush flowers in the bride’s bouquet….oh, if I were to get married again, I’d have a bouquet just like this.

I’m also swooning of the casual, wispy wedding hair the bride and bridesmaid have with their floral crowns. It is so delicate and effortlessly beautiful. The color of blue in the bridesmaid dress is perfection. It has a hint of earthiness to it, while still be classically blue, which is apparently the most popular color for bridesmaid dresses in the U.S.

I’m still in awe that I was able to contribute to this dreamy wedding in California. I hope it was as inspiring for you as it has been for me!

  • San Diego Wedding Inspiration – Part 3 – Wedding invitation

Today’s blog post discusses one of the main inspiration aspects I use as an artist for couple’s invitations. To avoid a spoiler alert, I will just go right into my question for the bride…

Allison: “How did your wedding invitations tie into the look of your wedding?”

Kara: “They were a direct reflection of the venue itself, which was so unique and special. I wanted to present something different to my guests that they hadn’t seen before. It was almost a preview of the night to come. Allowing my guests that “sneak peek” seemed to create a sense of growing anticipation.”

A couple’s wedding venue is usually the very first big wedding decision the couple will make together. The wedding venue usually says a lot about the couple’s tastes and interests, so it is a great way to incorporate these personal aspects into the wedding invitation. Using the wedding venue as the art on your custom wedding invitation also sets the scene for your guests and as Kara says creates “a sneak peek” of what to expect on their wedding day.

Kara and Taylor had a lot of beauty from their Stone Gardens Events wedding venue to choose from to feature on her wedding invitation. We decided to use the lake with the palm trees in the background from the first photo below as the feature for the invitation and the bridge with the curving ironwork as the artwork on the RSVP card. I love how the final invitation set was sunny and represented some of the unique beauty of their wedding venue.

  • Puerto Rico Wedding invitation

Puerto Rico Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings

The Puerto Rico Wedding Invitation is inspired by a recent trip my husband and I took to Puerto Rico. We had a fantastic trip, and while we weren’t there for terribly long we explored the rainforest, went kayaking in Fajardo, and explored the nooks and crannies at the most unique artist’s inn in Old San Juan, the historic district, but the most memorable part was when we stayed in a villa on Flamenco beach in Culebra, an island off the main island in Puerto Rico. Culebra is a small island, with most tourists (ourselves included) bouncing around in golf carts traveling from beach to beach. We adored taking our snorkel equipment to each and every beach on the island in search for the perfect underwater view…which happened to be the first beach we went to…go figure. 🙂

We were also so lucky to get a villa right on the beach. Flamenco beach has super clear waters and is part of a Natural Reserve area, so beyond the set of villas we were in, and the one next to us, we had the beach to ourselves at night after the day-trippers took the ferry back to the main island. It was magical seeing the sunset and then watching the stars from the beach. One of the unique things about Flamenco Beach is that the beach is like a cove with the beach arching around like a horseshoe. That is what I captured in the Puerto Rico Wedding invitation. The villas we stayed at along with the beautiful beach would make this an ideal location to get married. This design is ideal for destination wedding invitations as well.

While I am calling this beautiful beach invitation a Puerto Rico invitation, because that is where I gained the inspiration for this painting, I am sure this would be an ideal design for any couple’s beach wedding invitation.Puerto Rico Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings

Photo by Neal Palumbo, Studio 11 West.country_backyard_wedding_18

As I mentioned in Tuesday’s blog post, the bride in this Country backyard wedding did a lot of DIY touches. She spent a long time designing and “crafting” for her wedding. I was lucky enough to work with her on some of the hand-painted touches such as the music themed wedding invitations, thank you cards at each person’s place setting, escort cards which were strung on an antique windowpane, and Country Cobblestone thumbprint guestbook.

The couple both shares a love for music so they included that love visually in their wedding invitation design with the music notes graphic. Laura is a wonderful singer, who wrote and recorded their first dance song at their wedding. This song literally gives me chills…it is so amazing! Craig plays the guitar, so they had a white guitar at their wedding for guests to sign with a gold metallic Sharpie marker.

Impressed by the amount of DIY touches, the bride created for her wedding, I asked her a couple of questions about her tips for other DIY brides out there, as well as how paper products are incorporated into a DIY wedding.

Allison: How did your wedding paper tie into the look of your wedding?

Laura: The Hand-Painted Wedding touches captured the the rustic elegance I was going for. Purples and greens were bled together in a simple, understated elegance as the backdrop for my wedding invitations, escort cards and personalized thank-you cards at each place setting. I chose the Country Cobblestone thumbprint guest book which was perfect because it looked just like the dirt road behind the alter at our backyard country wedding. I hand made almost every decoration in the wedding and so I really appreciated the originality and the beauty of the Hand Painted wedding paper. Allison Krosnick is so talented and I feel so lucky to call her my sister.

Allison: What tips do you have for other DIY backyard wedding brides?

Laura: “Be easy on yourself! Seriously, if you are anything like I was, you are putting way more pressure on yourself than other people are. After a year of planning and crafting, a million pins on pinterest, and a few dozen spreadsheets, the wedding finally came. It was clear about two hours into hair and makeup that things weren’t going to go as planned. Tents were flying upside down, I was a full table short of place settings, and half the lights on my DIY backdrop made with organza and Christmas lights wouldn’t stay lit! The groomsmen forgot their boutonniere and my aisle runner was blowing in the wind as I stood at the alter!

And it was STILL one of the most amazing nights of my life. I stressed out trying to make everything perfect and then nothing went to plan and I realized it didn’t matter anyway, and no one cared. So please brides, be nice to yourself, you are only one woman.”

Come back tomorrow to learn the bride’s favorite moment.

  • Calming yet Bold, faceted Amethyst Quartz Invitation

Amethyst Quartz Invitation by Hand-Painted WeddingsThe Amethyst Quartz invitation is magical and modern at the same time. Amethyst is the birthstone for February, so it would be perfect for a February wedding. It would also be perfect for someone who is attracted to gemstones and perhaps has proclivities towards yoga.

I don’t talk about it too much within the Hand-Painted Weddings capacity, but I have some unique hobbies. I have a daily yoga practice, which for me is more than a physical practice, but is also my spiritual base. Branching out from my spiritual study of yoga, I study the ancient art of Ayurveda, and also collect gemstones.

Gemstones have been studied to have mystical and magical powers. Similar to the study of aromatherapy, the Amethyst is said to have a calming effect like lavender. I have two lavender invitations (1, 2) in the Hand-Painted Wedding invitations shop because I believe in having a sense of calm on your wedding day which allows all of your senses to take in the enormity of the event. The Amethyst Quartz invitation has the same calm meaning as the lavender invitations, but is more unique and much more bold. Perfect for a yoga wedding or spiritual wedding, this purple watercolor gemstone invitation is a beautiful way to introduce your guests to the calm, bold event to follow.

I also have seen a surge in bohemian weddings lately, and I think that the Amethyst Quartz Invitation would be a perfect touch to a bohemian wedding as well.

  • Literature Wedding Invitation

Literature Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings

The Literature Wedding Invitation is perfect for a couple getting married in a library, or for the couple who is in love with reading. I love when couples choose to bring their hobbies and loves into their wedding. A wonderful way to personalize your wedding is through your wedding paper starting with the invitation and continuing through wedding day paper such as ceremony programs, menus, escort cards, table numbers. Later this week I will be sharing more literature themed wedding inspiration.

Please note that the statue busts in this invitation can be male and male, or female and female upon request.

  • Pride Invitation in Celebration of LGBT Pride Month

Pride Rainbow Invitation by Hand-Painted WeddingsI made this invitation in celebration of National LGBT Pride Month. As a firm believer in same sex marriage equality, I believe that all of my invitations are made to be appropriate and unique to the couple, no matter the gender or sexual orientation. That said, I also wanted to design an invitation that specifically celebrates the Gay Pride movement, so I created this hand-painted watercolor rainbow invitation commemorating LGBT Pride month.

The rainbow art is bright and happy with a nod towards Gay pride which is more subtle than using gender graphics or symbols. I am really proud that I am in the generation where gay couples are receiving equal rights to be legally married. It actually blows my mind how long this government process has taken but it warms my heart every time a new state passes a law in favor of same sex marriages. This invitation is a design of celebration and pride, as well as a small prayer that we as a people will be accepting and welcoming of same sex couples.

  • Autumn Invitation with Gold Shimmer Accents

Custom Autumn Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings Custom Autumn Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings Custom Autumn Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted WeddingsThis beautiful custom autumn invitation with hand-painted gold shimmer accents is an extension of the couple’s custom autumn save-the-date postcard that I featured on Monday’s blog post. One of the fun parts of my job is figuring out how to expand and grow a design from piece to piece such as I did here from the Save-the-Date to Invitation. It is much more fun if wedding paper is similar but not too matchy-matchy.

In this design the intertwined branches on the strong trees of the Save-the-Date design are zoomed into the delicate branches intwining in this loose border around the invitation. These intertwining branches expand and crawl into the edges of the RSVP card. The zooming into the branches is quite fitting from the Save-the-Date to the Invitation as the guest’s get more information about the upcoming wedding. I love how delicate yet strong this design is. I worked with this couple to design their Save-the-Dates at the same time as their Invitation and they were then able to stagger mailing them out.

Both the Save-the-Date postcards and the invitation had the gold watercolor accents added to them so they had a gold shimmer under the light, which I zoomed into for you in the photos above. Gold watercolor accents are a great alternative to gold foil for a couple that is looking to subtly add gold to their organic designs.

  • Autumn Save-the-Date Postcard with Gold Shimmer

Custom Autumn Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings Custom Autumn Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings Custom Autumn Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted WeddingsAutumn invitations…my favorite! I worked with the bride, Katie, to create her custom Invitation package including their Save-the-Dates. The Autumn Save-the-Date features two trees with intersecting branches which subtly symbolizes the strength of each tree (or person) as they intersect their lives together in marriage. The invitations are an extension of this design and zoom into the branches further…but I will share with you the invitation designs tomorrow!

Katie chose to have her Save-the-Dates as postcards. One little tip I like to give couples who choose to send out postcards is to ask their local post office to hand-cancel their postcards. Many couples choose to do this for their invitations as well, but particularly for a postcard, you’ll want to add that special attention. The reason I push this for postcard in particular is because some of the machinery that pulls the postcards through for metering tends to scuff up the cards. Not every post office does hand-canceling so be sure to inquire ahead of time, and drop off your Save-the-Date postcards or invitation sets during a slow time at the post office.

This couple also decided to have a little gold shimmer added to their designs. This is a great alternative to gold foil. I printed the Save-the-Date postcards and painted shimmery gold watercolor accents to the leaves on the front and back of the design. In the light, these gold accents shimmer beautifully!! Gold is all the rage these days, and it is perfect for autumn weddings, so if gold foil is not in your price range and a little too structured in design for you, consider adding a hand-painted gold shimmer to your order.

  • Real Destination Wedding in Cartagena

Cartagena Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted Weddings Cartagena Wedding posted on Hand-Painted Weddings. Photo credit: Pedraza ProduccionesThis week you are in for a real treat! I am so excited to share this real destination wedding all the way from Cartagena, Columbia. I had noticed a popularity in Cartagena weddings since this wedding, and have recently learned from someone who is getting married there next February, that it started becoming popular in 2002 when Juan Pablo Montoya, the Formula 1 car driver, who then became a NASCAR driver, had his lavish wedding there. After that, one of Colombia’s ex-president’s sons got married in Cartagena, as well as, the son of the richest man in Colombia. With all that press, of course Cartagena became a popular destination wedding site.

I worked with the couple on their custom wedding invitations based on a photograph of this iconic street in the center of town. Recently, when I received this photo of the couple on their wedding day walking in that same street, I literally beamed with excitement! It is so exciting to see the artwork alive in their wedding photo!

I am a pretty sentimental person, so when the invitations are complete, I often find myself wondering how the wedding came together and how wonderful their big day went. That is why I love posting couple’s wedding photographs! It is just so exciting to see how couple’s Hand-Painted Wedding invitations relate to the big picture of the entire wedding.

Tomorrow I will be sharing more photos from this gorgeous wedding in Cartagena, as well as some words from the beautiful bride, so be sure to keep your eye for it!

  • Damask Invitation – Patterns and Washes Collide

Damask invitation by Hand-Painted WeddingsI like taking something seen before in weddings and making it unique. In this design the bold damask pattern with roots in retro modern fabric design is misted with a torquoise watercolor wash, creating a collision between patterns and washes. The type also has a unique collision of the upright capital font and the retro-inspired, handsome script font.

This wedding is perfect for a wedding that takes place in a historical building. It also would work really well for an offbeat couple who enjoys the retro look and is incorporating it into their theme. Later this week I will expand on how the damask theme can be incorporated into the other details of your wedding, so stay tuned.

  • Butterfly Wedding Invitation

Butterfly Wedding Invitation by Hand-Painted WeddingsIt is so exciting to be building up this year’s collection of Hand-Painted Wedding Shop Invitations! This brand new Butterfly Wedding invitation is inspired by one of the most beautiful creatures in nature, the butterfly.

I was surprised to notice that there aren’t many butterfly wedding invitations on the market right now, so I’m excited to offer this unique option for couples getting married in the spring, summer, or maybe even the early fall season. This design features an elegant calligraphy font along with a modern, classic headline font. This butterfly has a beautiful jewel toned color palette and is on top of a simple yellow and orange flower branch.

I am often inspired by nature for wedding invitations because there is so much untouched and pure beauty in nature. The butterfly in particular is an animal that flutters in such a pure way that attracts even the most distracted attention to it. The Butterfly Wedding Invitation is down-to-earth with a calm, pretty nature to it.

  • Vintage Purple Feather Invitation

Vintage Purple Feather Invitation by Hand-Painted WeddingsInspired by the elegance and glamour of the 1920s era, this vintage purple feather invitation features soft lilac ostrich feathers in the background. The typography in this invitation set is inspired by the Art Deco era.

I’m excited to offer this glamorous watercolor wedding invitation in the Hand-Painted Weddings shop. I think the Great Gatsby wedding trend is timeless, and maybe not as popular as it was when the Leo film was launched, but I think that is a good thing (because you’ll be more unique if you go with this theme for your wedding). Ostrich feathers are dreamy and dramatic. Purple is also still such a popular wedding color, and I love how the feathers are portrayed in the watercolor with their graceful brush strokes.

Throughout the remainder of the week, I will be sharing with you an inspiration board for a vintage 1920s wedding theme, as well as a special bridal portrait inspired by the Vintage Purple Feather Invitation.

This double-sided Earth Day wedding invitation features a painting of a landscape with lush green grass and tree on one side which your guests can frame as art. The other side features the traditional wedding invitation art.

I love the saying “Our Story Begins Here” because I truly believe that the wedding starts with the invitation, making it one of the most important visual decisions of your wedding.

Custom Pink Cinderella invitation set by Hand-Painted WeddingsCustomized projects come in all shapes and sizes. This one was a variation on the Cinderella Invitation set in Hand-Painted Weddings Shop. This invitation was for a happy couple who was going to have their vow renewal in magical Disneyland. The colors in this invitation changed from light blues to pinks, and the cards were printed on a pearlescent paper giving it a very ethereal shimmer. The outer envelope was also a beautiful pearlescent envelope to match. I love how this invitation came out!
